If you were one of those who believed in rumors that 2020 Mazda RX-9 will be released next year as one of the presents for Mazda 50th anniversary, we must disappoint you. Not only that it will not be shown next year, but there are high chances that it will not happen soon. The reason is, as always, finances. Mazda’s director and senior managing executive officer of R&D, Kiyoshi Fujiwara said that they have not enough money to improve it, and they will not repeat the same version from 2020 RX-8 model in this model either.
2020 Mazda RX-9 has been announced as a very attractive and modern car, with the interesting shape of the front bumper, in order to be aerodynamic, but also to change the usual design of sports cars. It should be made of lightweight materials, and surely be closer to MX-5 Miata to weight. However, there are similarities between the RX-8 model and sporty cars in the class.
Besides the obviously 2-passengers cabin, there were no clues about the interior of 2020 Mazda RX-9 before, so we expected the same design as on RX-8 model. Unfortunately, we are deprived of all improvements in the cabin that could be used in this version.
Mazda introduced their innovation at Tokyo Auto Show 2015, calling it “a rotary engine”, a special type of engine, rotated for 180 degrees about its longitudinal axis. It also has a three-angle rotor and fuel injections located closer to the combustion chamber. Both should improve fuel economy. Besides that, the engine has a top-mounted turbocharger and highly positioned exhausts. It should be able to produce 400 horsepower of strength. When Toyota showed this engine, they did not particularly name it for 2020 Mazda RX-9; they called it Skyaktiv-R rotary engine as a part of RX-vision concept instead. They also said that it is the future of the car industry. We were able to see it on RX-8 model, have been thrilled with the possible improvements of the engine that will come with this series, but nothing actually happened. As they said, only Mazda can have that engine and only with rotary engine Mazda has a future in sports car industry.
2020 Mazda RX-9 Release Date and Price
Unfortunately, 2020 Mazda RX-9 will not be released at Mazda 50th anniversary next year, and the rotary engine will not be a part of future models until the manufacturer is not improved them to be better than the current model. According to their chief, that will not be possible to achieve for less than five years, and they will not share with the buyer’s anything half-solutions. If those dreams had come true, RX-9 would have cost in the price range from $71,000 to $84,000 which is way cheaper from other similar models in the class, like Nissan GT-R, or Acura NSX. Since the production of the RX-8 version ended in 2012, the new model could be on the market after 2020.
