According to some recent information our team has got, one of the best-selling three-row crossovers coming from Ford has been on its way to hit the market as a 2020 model. Namely, the 2020 Ford Explorer should show some serious changes and updates in terms of platform, design, technology as well as those under the hood.
- a brand-new platform,
- a brand-new transmission,
- an optional all-wheel drive,
- larger dimensions,
- more spacious interior,
- more than one engine option.
- a bit expensive,
- especially its higher trim levels;
- lots of details still not confirmed.
When it comes to exterior design of the 2020 Ford Explorer, this model is going to hit the market as a five-door three-row crossover that will be more modern and attractive than its predecessor. When we talk about innovations, the first great change should happen in terms of its architecture. The upcoming Explorer will probably abandon its current CD4 platform and ride on a brand-new CD6 shared with the upcoming Ford Mustang and the latest Lincoln Aviator. Such a platform allows the all-wheel drive system, at least as an option. The new crossover will also mostly use aluminum for its chassis and such weight reduction should significantly boost the overall performance and improve fuel-economy. The other great change involves its dimensions. The new Explorer will be larger in size than its predecessor, but, of course, still smaller than its cousin Expedition. The upcoming Explorer should be available in several trim levels – base, XLT, Limited, ST and Platinum.
As we have already mentioned, its larger dimensions will allow more space inside the cabin of the 2020 Ford Explorer. The crossover will provide a family-friendly cabin with three rows of seats that should perfectly accommodate up to seven or eight passengers. Even the third row passengers should expect plenty of headroom and legroom. Of course, the new Explorer will still offer less space than its Expedition relative. The company should also use some high-quality and lightweight materials inside its cabin. Other updates could be expected in terms of technology and safety so the new Explorer will get the latest SYNC infotainment system provided on a larger touch-screen.
Under the hood of the 2020 Ford Explorer, the fans should definitely expect more than one engine choice. The base model could use a 2.3-liter turbo-four that should now hit up to 400 horsepower. Also, the fans will love the ST version which will replace the earlier Sport trim, as it has been the case with the Edge. The Explorer ST should use a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6. Another possibility involves a 2.7-liter twin-turbo V6, but we are waiting for more official details at the moment. Also, the current six-speed automatic transmission could be replaced by a brand-new ten-speed automatic, found in Expedition.
2020 Ford Explorer Release Date and Price
The release date of the 2020 Ford Explorer hasn’t been officially confirmed yet. However, the price could be a bit more expensive compared to the current model so the base trim may start around $36,000 and it could go up to $60,000 for the Platinum trim.
