The 2019 Tesla Semi-Truck has been confirmed for a September debut, but Tesla CEO Elon Musk decided to give us a little preview of what’s to come during his recent TED Talk. He also talked about his plans for a new tunnel boring company that will focus on underground roads for alleviating traffic, but the teaser image introducing a rather vague image of the front side of a very tall truck with a striking set of headlights is our main focus at the moment.
The 2019 Tesla Semi-Truck is a part of the Tesla Master Plan that also consists of an all-electric fleet of pickup trucks, heavy-duty trucks, and even a smaller crossover SUV along with brand-new mobility solutions. The teaser image suggests a sleek and streamlined new look for the company’s first semi-truck. The hazy teaser doesn’t exactly reveal much else than a piece of its polished design. Although, it is apparent that the side mirrors have been left out in their entirety from the truck’s exterior.
What we know so far
According to Musk, the 2019 Tesla Semi-Truck is already fully operational and he even managed to test drive one himself. His first impression – “it feels like a sports car.” The truck will reportedly be able to go for long hauls, with the exact range of the battery still to be disclosed. Rumor has it that the new semi will be using solar panels on its trailer in order to fully extend its range.
Musk’s vision for the new semi-truck is for it to ultimately reduce the cost of cargo transport and increase safety on the roads. As of now, the biggest expenses for any heavy-duty truck owner are fuel and the driver himself, and Musk is proposing to alleviate those costs by offering a fully-electric truck with some form of Tesla’s autopilot autonomous technology.
The Boring Company
Other big revelation of Musk’s Ted Talk was his big plan for The Boring Company. Detailed in the video below, he announced his vision to create a network of tunnels in cities with congested traffic, where vehicles would travel freely on high-speed sleds between two predetermined points. The Boring Company is, however, completely unrelated to the Hyperloop, the previously envisioned low-pressure, high-speed transport system that Musk isn’t actually working on at the moment.
