Kia has just premiered the 2018 Kia Stonic, a beand new small SUV that come hot on the heels the grand reveal of the new Hyundai Kona subcompact SUV, from the South Korean’s carmaker’s sister company, Hyundai, that took place earlier this month. The new Stonic will be entering the highly competitive field of crossover SUV’s that includes the likes of Honda HR-V, Nissan Juke, Toyota CH-R and the Chevy Trax, to name few.
Exterior and Interior
Supporting the new Stonic will be a strong and sturdy new platform which is principally constructed using lightweight materials that surround the 51 percent high-strength steel. Stylistically, the new model features sharp design lines and a new C-pillar design, as well as good-looking taillights with U-shaped LED lights. There is also a sizable rear spoiler and a faux skid plate on the bottom of the bumper.
On the inside, there is plenty of cabin space. Kia even goes so far to day that their new model will be a class-leader in terms of the shoulder room they will offer their customers. There will also be about 12.4 cubic feet of storage room in the trunk. From the high-tech side, expect to see a host of useful features like the Apple CarPlay, Android Auto smartphone integration system, and the new Kia infotainment system with a large accompanying touchscreen. Furthermore, look out for some new tech aids and safety features such as the adaptive cruise control, collision warning, automatic braking, blind spot warning and lane departure warning, as well as the rear cross traffic warning.
Engine and Powertrain
Exact specifics regarding the engine and powertrain are yet to be released for the US market. However, we already know that in the European and Asian markets, the new 2018 Kia Stonic will come with a choice of gasoline engines ranging from 1.0 to 1.4 liters in displacement. Moreover, the new Stonic will be offered with a 1.6-liter diesel option as well. But, Kia is yet to confirm any of this information. We might also see a 2.0-liter four-cylinder that is capable of producing up to 147-horsepower or a 175-horsepower turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine, both of which are featured under the under the new Kona’s hood. In the Kona they come alongside the six-speed automatic and a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, respectively.
2018 Kia Stonic Release Date and Price
Official release date is yet to be determined, but we will get our first chance to see the new 2018 Kia Stonic in person at the is 2017 Frankfurt Auto Show this September, where it is expected to make its grand debut. As for the pricing, we will hopefully get some details at the Frankfurt showcase, but we expect the new 2018 Kia Stonic to be priced correspondingly to its position in the subcompact SUV class, where prices range from $20.000 – $25.000.
