Toyota has just unveiled their latest 2017 Toyota FT-4X Concept at the 2017 New York Auto Show. During a highly anticipated live stream from their New York showcase, the company used adjectives like rugged and hardcore to describe their newest concept, but the FT-4X is everything but that. It is designed for urban-dwelling millennials with a desire to go out and explore. Something that Toyota described as casual-core. We don’t know what that means either.
What many fans expected to see from this FJ Cruiser inspired vehicle is many of the original’s off-roading capabilities and its simple and masculine design. However, because the market shift towards smaller and more fuel-efficient SUVs, Toyota decided to step away from the 4Runner design and bring the outside in instead. The result is a vehicle that intended to provide a new adventure for young urbanites looking to get out of the city.
The new 2017 Toyota FT-4X Concept is built on the company’s TNGA platform, just like the C-HR and as a result the two vehicles are pretty much identical in size. The FT-4X, however, fully maximizes its practicality with a bevy of chunky holes, hefty wheels with all-season tires and a large rear opening that could fit any kind of gear. All of these features were included so the FT-4X is ready for the many unplanned adventures millennials are supposedly embarking on.
One of the more interesting design innovations is the new Multi-Hatch design that allows the rear hatch to be opened in two ways: with split doors or as a one-piece hatch. You can choose between the two with a large rotating handle. There is also a flat roof with a charging docked and a Go Pro camera in the rearview mirror on the driver’s side.
Inside the FT-4X the designers continue the versatility theme. In the confines of the cabin you can find heated and cooled storage boxes, a sleeping bag, and rubber mat lined area for safe keeping of wet or muddy equipment and clothes. The cabin is also very tech savvy with features like the single screen functions that serve as the main instrument cluster, as well as the smartphone dock for navigation. In the middle of the dashboard, there is a removable multimedia system, however, there was no mention of what apps that will be in it. Which is kind of surprising considering the FT-4X is targeted specifically at millennials.
Engine and Powertrain
The 2017 Toyota FT-4X Concept isn’t a fully functional vehicle and currently has no powertrain. However, the engine bay is said to fit a low-displacement inline-4. Moreover, the “4X” in the title is a reference to the concept’s all-wheel-drive capability, which apparently has a conventional mechanical setup and a low-range setting. Given that the FT-4X is trying to sideline as a capable off-road vehicle, approach and departure angles have been included to navigate the rougher terrain if need be.
2017 Toyota FT-4X Concept Release Date and Price
Toyota has no plans of producing the 2017 Toyota FT-4X Concept at the moment, but if that day ever comes and we see a version of the FT4X in the showrooms it would likely go head to head with the likes of Jeep Renegade.
