2017 Mercedes-AMG GT3 Edition 50

2017 will mark the 50th anniversary of AMG. To celebrate the company has been rolling out special editions, and the 2017 Mercedes-AMG GT3 Edition 50 is the latest model they chose to treat us to. The legendary German tuning company was originally founded in Affalterbach, Germany, back in 1967. Today, they represent the wholly-owned performance arm of Mercedes-Benz and the company’s official tuner.

Design

The 2017 Mercedes-AMG GT3 Edition 50 is based on the Mercedes-AMG GT3 race car with whom it shares most of its features with. The Edition 50, however, has some special touches to commemorate the special occasion. There is a bespoke gray paint job with some black stripes on the hood. Moreover, the 50th edition model features “50 Years AMG” badging on the doors, on the seats, as well as the hood. Inside, the special edition adds a carbon fiber racing seat, a roll cage, and a small racing appropriate steering wheel. Fitting in with the race theme are the switchgear and a digital instrument cluster.

Engine and Powertrain

Just like the AMG’s GT3 race car, upon which the 2017 Mercedes-AMG GT3 Edition 50 is based on, to powertrain will consist of the regular 6.2-liter V-8 engine instead of the newer 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 that the GT road car is using. Inside the GT3, this setup can deliver up to 550 horsepower, but usually the output is massively restricted. AMG didn’t have much else to say when it comes to the powertrain, but we know that under the GT3 race car’s hood the 6.2 liter V8 can go from zero to 60 mph in 2.9 sec at the top speed of 185-200 mph. So, we expect that this new limited edition will perform in a similar way. According to AMG this model was developed to appeal to “collectors with a passion for motorsport.”

Mercedes-AMG chose not to share any further details, they just said that this special edition celebrates “50 years of hard work and countless liters of blood, sweat, and tears.” They continued: “we translated our total motorsport passion into a unique vehicle.”

2017 Mercedes-AMG GT3 Edition 50 Release Date and Price

AMG said they will produce only 5 models of the 2017 Mercedes-AMG GT3 Edition 50. They did the same thing five years ago with the SLS AMG GT3 Edition 45. Buyers will need to place their orders directly with AMG’s headquarters in Affalterbach, Germany. Those lucky few who get to own this limited edition could also opt for a track driving coaching program that is organized by AMG, if they feel inclined to.
